Peter Zumthor'un Chur'daki “Shelter for Roman Archaeological Site" projesi, arkeolojik kalıntıları çevreleyen çağdaş bir koruma yapısı olarak 1986 yılında inşa ediliyor. İki Roma yapısının temelleriyle, üçüncü bir yapının yalnızca bir köşesinin izlerini içeren alan, ahşap lamellerle tanımlanan hafif bir strüktürle çevreleniyor. Bu yarı geçirgen kabuk, antik duvarların izlerini birebir takip ederek Roma yapılarının hacmini soyut biçimde yeniden kuruyor.


Ziyaretçi rotası, kalıntıların üzerinden geçen modern bir çelik platformla tanımlanıyor; bu güzergâh, fiziksel teması sınırlandırırken görsel ve mekânsal bir okuma sağlıyor. İç mekânda, siyah kumaşlarla kaplanan Roma duvarları ve içeri giren doğal ışık, arkeolojik katmanlara odaklanmayı kolaylaştırıyor. Yapının geçirgen yüzeyleri kent sesini içeri alırken, günümüzle geçmiş arasında geçici bir eşik yoluşturuluyor.

Peter Zumthor's 'Shelter for Roman Archaeological Site' project in Chur was built in 1986 as a contemporary protective structure surrounding archaeological remains. The area, which contains the foundations of two Roman structures and the traces of only one corner of a third structure, is surrounded by a lightweight structure defined by wooden slats. This semi-transparent shell abstractly reconstructs the volume of the Roman structures by closely following the traces of the ancient walls.


The visitor route is defined by a modern steel platform that passes over the remains, limiting physical contact while providing a visual and spatial reading. Inside, Roman walls covered in black fabric and natural light entering the space facilitate a focus on the archaeological layers. The structure's permeable surfaces allow the sounds of the city to enter, creating a temporary threshold between the present and the past.
