The work belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition, which means 'pictures of the floating world.' During the Edo period, this art form developed in line with the daily life, entertainment culture, and aesthetic tastes of the urban merchant class, spreading through multi-coloured prints produced using wooden blocks. Thanks to both its content and its reproducible structure, ukiyo-e conveyed the urban culture of the period to a wide audience.
